Gürcü Hatun

Since the author of the idea of the project was a representative of Turkey and many students and teachers were from Turkey, we decided to study and introduce the history of Gurcu Khatun to our friends.

Gurji Khatun, the grandson of King Tamar. At the age of 13, she was betrothed to the 17-year-old Sultan of Rum, Ghias ud-din Kaikhushru II, Sultan of Konia. The marriage was political in nature, and since both Georgia and the Sultanate of Rum played an important political role in the Middle East, the wedding of Tamar and Khusrev II was a big event.

Fascinated by Tamar's beauty and intelligence, Khusrev II called his wife Gurji Khatun (Georgian lady). Tamar was the Sultan's third wife. Due to her personal qualities, Tamar soon became the sultan's most beloved wife, which irritated the sultan's other wives, and they tried to poison Gurji Khatun, led by the eldest wife. Enraged, Khusrev II executed his first wife.

Khusrev II wanted Tamar's face to be engraved on the coin minted during his reign. This was strictly prohibited by Islamic law, then the king used a saw and created an emblem - the sun in the Leo zodiac. On a coin struck in 1236, the face of the most beautiful woman was engraved in the disk of the sun along with a rampant lion. This is the origin of the emblem spread in the East - the sun and the lion.

The wise and merciful queen was sincerely loved by the Iconians. They admired her beauty, education, intelligence, political insight. Gurji Khatun protected his needy subjects, actively participated in solving state affairs.

Such love of the people was not surprising, because the queen immediately ordered to lower the price of bread, and to distribute it to the needy for free. He founded a bread market, the operation of which he controlled. Gurji Khatun participated in meetings with ambassadors of foreign countries, conducted negotiations, actively interfered in the political management of the country.

Sultan loved his wife so much that he took her to the sky and depicted her in the sun. Gurji Khatun was worshiped as a saint in the Muslim kingdom and was called the queen of two worlds - Muslim and Christian. Thanks to her beauty and intelligence, she became a legend during her lifetime.

Tamari - Gurji Khatun was friends with the greatest thinker of the East of all times, Jalal-ed-Din Rumi Mevlana. Their relationship is described in the book "Life of Scientists" written by Ahmed Evlaki in 1318-1358. The first portrait of Rumi was created with the efforts of Gurji Khatun.

Georgian princess and Seljuq queen Gurju Khatun was a close friend of Rumi. She was the one who sponsored the construction of his tomb in Konya. The 13th century Mevlâna Mausoleum, with its mosque, dance hall, schools and living quarters for dervishes, remains a destination of pilgrimage to this day, and is probably the most popular pilgrimage site to be regularly visited by adherents of every major religion.

Just like 700 years ago, every night a star appears near Akldam's head and shines like a seal's eye. In the East, they believe that this star is named after the Georgian queen, she is as unattainable and beautiful as the queen was; That Gurji Khatun will look at the resting place of his beloved teacher from heaven. Looking at him, you realize that only great people can beat time.

There are no written sources about the last years of Gurji Khatun's life, the grave of Gurji Khatun was unknown to contemporaries, but in August 2019, it was reported that during the ongoing archaeological excavations in the Fasinler district of Erzurum, Turkey, the tomb of Tamar, known as Gurji-Khatun, the grandson of King Tamar, was found. Along with the grave of Gurji Khatun, the sarcophagus of his son Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad II was also discovered.

In the history of relations between Turkey and Georgia, this was a beautiful period, which was called the era of Gurji Khatun

After learning about this story, we felt a great desire to visit these places if we get the chance.
